Marketing should be at the forefront of an entrepreneur’s mind. If people do not know that you exist, it is going to be hard to run a healthy business. What’s more, if you market the wrong way to the wrong people you can waste a lot of time and money!

What is a Marketing Plan?

Not to be confused with a marketing strategy, a marketing plan is a yearly layout of your marketing efforts. It is a guide that should be modified as your business grows and new marketing practices emerge.

Why Do You Need A Marketing Plan?

Marketing is crucial to business success. So much so, that many companies spend 8-10% of their revenue just on their marketing efforts!

But implementing tactics without a plan is like trying to build a house without the blueprint! You will inevitably spin your wheels and waste time. A marketing plan will keep you focused and on track, it’s an invaluable business document.

Steps to Developing a Marketing Plan

1 | Develop a marketing strategy

Before you can make a plan listing out what you will do, you will need to develop a marketing strategy which is the foundation of any good marketing plan. If you are unsure on how to do that, check out my post on the topic here.

2 | Figure Out the Best Way To Reach Your Target Audience

Once you find out where your target audience is (part of the marketing strategy), figure out which places will reach your audience the best. Not all places are created equal! For example, your target audience may be on Facebook and Instagram (they likely are) but which will better for you? It depends on your brand and the content you will share.

Visual content does extremely well on Instagram, so if you are an artist or creative entrepreneur you should definitely be on Instagram! If you share a lot of business content, then LinkedIn or Facebook may be a better fit. This step will probably require a decent amount of research, but it will be worth it in the end!

3 | Start Thinking About Your Brand

Now onto the fun part!  You know where you want to reach your audience, now you’ll need to make sure you put your best foot forward. Having branded images is a great start. You’ll need to think about the colors you want and what fonts. What mood do you want to convey? What do you want your audience to walk away with when they engage with you?

This is also part of your branding, but it’s important information for marketing as well so that everything works together seamlessly.

4 | Measure Your Results

It will serve you well not to forget this step! You can’t improve on something you don’t measure, and you want to be sure that your efforts are working. If they aren’t getting you closer to the goals you set out in your marketing strategy, you’ll want to know sooner rather than later. Tracking your progress will help you to tweak as you go along. You can do more of what is working and less of what isn’t!
