Road To Success: Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable

There are a lot of factors that contribute to success. On our journey to the life we want, there are going to be many curveballs thrown at us. One thing I have learned over the years while running my businesses, is that any successful entrepreneur needs to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. I believe this is especially true for creatives. Our work often times puts us in unique situations; taking us to far away places, putting us in rooms with people who are very different from us, and pushing us physically and mentally.

success, inspiration, motivation

I remember when I first heard the concept about getting comfortable with being uncomfortable—a light bulb went off in my head. It was around the inception of my videography business. Everywhere I turned, there seemed to be an uncomfortable situation waiting for me. Whether it was trying out a new camera, learning how to communicate with “difficult” clients, or trying to communicate with my colleagues… I felt like I was way in over my head.

In one particularly low moment in my life, I was considering changing course entirely. I met with my mentor, and over lattes and croissants, I told her my fears. I wasn’t sure I had what it took to live this creative life. The consistent rejection and the requirement to work with very big personalities was giving me pause.  After I went through my spiel, I remember her taking a moment. I think she was trying to make sure she considered everything I had told her, she wanted to give a thoughtful response. Eventually she said to me very plainly, “If you want to make it and get to your end goal, you have to be willing to accept whatever comes your way”.  She went on to do amazing things in her career as a singer and actress. I still speak with her in between her busy schedule, but I never forgot that moment.

Life has many ups and downs, and business is no different. The journey of an entrepreneur requires you to be able to adapt to your surroundings (most of the time, quickly). Not only that, you need to be able to tune into what your clients need and have the ability to communicate to them that you can provide it!

If you feel uncomfortable, this is a good thing! I know it may sound counter intuitive but let me explain. Uncomfortable=growth and growth=success. That is very simply put, but when you boil it down that is pretty much the case. Anything that is worth achieving is going to take work, and so we have to be willing to do that.

So how do we do this? It sounds nearly impossible. I think the most important tip I can give is, EMBRACE IT! Embrace everything, the positive and negative experiences in your personal life and the life of your business. If you keep an open mind and heart, you will inevitably find yourself becoming more comfortable in every situation.

Rise to the occasion,  you are going to be challenged, and you are going to feel scared! This is completely normal and I’d even argue that they are requirements as you go through your journey to build the life that you want.
